The Worst Trans Fat Offenders
News - June 16, 2009 2:07 P.M.

The restaurant industry has some serious explaining to do. In spite of a deluge of research that links the consumption of trans-fatty acids to negative health effects, too many of our favorite fast-food and sit-down chains still serve food that's teeming with the junk. They add useless calories, build bad cholesterol (known as LDL), and lower your good cholesterol (HDL). The American Heart Association says you should consume only two grams or less of trans fats daily. (And we say less. Zero is a good number.)Why do so many restaurants still use partially hydrogenated oil when they know how unhealthy it is? Because it's cheap. And here's the real rub: The food industry is savvy to the fact that trans fats are unpopular. But because the FDA allows the food industry to list any product with less than 0.5 grams of the dangerous lipid as having "zero trans fats," restaurants and packaged food producers can deceive consumers about serving trans fat-free food. Take KFC for example. They openly brag about having no trans fats, but "partially hydrogenated" oils show up 91 times on their menu's ingredient lists! Luckily, avoiding trans fats just got a little easier. Eat This, Not That! scoured nutrition tables from over 60 chain fast-food and sit-down restaurants across the country in search of the trans-fattiest dishes. You'll be shocked by what we found. Protect your heart -- avoid these ticker-harming fat blasts at all costs. Continue article at original source
